USAA Car Buying Service: what happened to it, and what to use now

USAA ended its car buying service in 2020, and people still search for it every day. Here is why it ended, what USAA still does, and the options military families in North Carolina and Virginia use instead.

About 2,400 people a month still search for it.

The service is gone. The reason people wanted it, a price settled before the dealership, is not.

What happened

The service was TrueCar, under USAA’s name

USAA never ran the pricing itself. TrueCar did.

What it was
A USAA-branded website where members saw price offers from TrueCar Certified Dealers before they visited one. For years it was TrueCar’s biggest partner.
When it ended
USAA told TrueCar in early 2020 that it would stop. The two agreed to a short extension, and the service closed for good on October 1, 2020.
Why it ended
TrueCar’s SEC filing says USAA wanted to streamline its business and concentrate on its main products, and that the choice was unrelated to how the program performed. USAA paid TrueCar a $20 million transition fee.
What USAA still does
Auto loans and auto insurance. Get approved for the loan first and you can shop like a cash buyer anywhere.

What to use now

Four ways to the same idea

Three of them are TrueCar again, under another name. One needs no membership at all.

TrueCar Military
TrueCar’s own program for active duty service members, veterans and their families, with a Military Appreciation Package of extra benefits that are not offered in every state.
Navy Federal Car Buying Service
TrueCar again, for Navy Federal members. Navy Federal says members paid an average of $2,749 below sticker on new vehicles in 2025. How it works.
PenFed Car Buying Service
TrueCar again, open to anyone who joins PenFed, with a lower loan rate when you buy through it. How it works.
Factory military rebates
Jeep, Ram, Chevrolet, GMC, Ford and Toyota each run a military offer of their own. They come from the automaker, not a club. Every offer, compared.
The Carolina Auto Program
Every vehicle on the Carolina Auto Program comes from one of our dealers, a store that agreed to one no-haggle, out-the-door price for our drivers before it joined. You spend five and a half hours in the off-road trim on the Carova 4x4 beach first, $325 a vehicle, drivers 25 and older. The price comes by email on a numbered certificate, good for 30 days. Beat it in writing within the 30 days and your $325 comes back. Nothing to join, and you can still bring your credit union loan.
