PenFed Car Buying Service: how it works, the rate discount, and who runs it
PenFed was named for the Pentagon and once served only defense workers. Now anyone can join, and its car buying service is TrueCar with a lower loan rate on top. Here is how it works and what it doesn’t change.

The website and the dealers are TrueCar’s. The discount on the loan is PenFed’s.

- Buy through the service and finance with PenFed, and PenFed lowers your rate on 36-, 48-, 60- and 72-month loans once the purchase is verified.
- The extras
- Members-only cash from select automakers after 60 days of membership, a Buyer’s Bonus of up to $1,000 in extra benefits, and up to $500 back on an insurance deductible (not in New Hampshire or New York).
- Who joins
- Anyone. PenFed opens your membership during the loan application.
- PenFed and TrueCar
- In January 2026 a group led by TrueCar’s founder took TrueCar private for about $227 million. PenFed is one of the investors, plans to grow its auto lending through TrueCar, and its CEO joined the new board.
- What it doesn’t change
- You still go to the dealer’s lot for a short test drive and handle the trade-in and add-ons there.

A short drive tells you little about a 4x4. Five and a half hours tells you plenty.
- The Carolina Auto Program
- Every vehicle on the Carolina Auto Program comes from one of our dealers, a store that agreed to one no-haggle, out-the-door price for our drivers before it joined. You spend five and a half hours in the off-road trim on the Carova 4x4 beach first, $325 a vehicle, drivers 25 and older. The price comes by email on a numbered certificate, good for 30 days. Beat it in writing within the 30 days and your $325 comes back. Nothing to join, and you can still bring your credit union loan.

How does the PenFed Car Buying Service work?
You shop on a PenFed site run by TrueCar and see upfront price offers from TrueCar Certified Dealers. Finance the vehicle with PenFed after buying through the service and PenFed gives you a lower loan rate on 36- to 72-month terms.
Do I have to be in the military to use PenFed?
No. PenFed was once limited to defense workers but is now open to anyone. You can apply for the loan and PenFed opens your membership during the application.
How much does the PenFed Car Buying Service save?
PenFed says members saved an average of $3,231 off sticker on new vehicles bought from TrueCar Certified Dealers in 2025. Savings vary by vehicle, region, dealer and factory incentives.
What extras come with it?
PenFed lists members-only cash from select automakers (you must be a member for at least 60 days), a Buyer’s Bonus of up to $1,000 in extra benefits, and up to $500 back on an auto insurance deductible, not offered in New Hampshire or New York.

Can I use a PenFed loan on the Carolina Auto Program?
Yes, as a regular PenFed auto loan. The lower rate is tied to buying through PenFed’s TrueCar service, so ask PenFed what rate applies before you choose.
Is the Carolina Auto Program connected to PenFed?
No. Beach 4x4 LLC runs it and is not affiliated with PenFed, TrueCar or any automaker.
